The SHYBA Stars Program is led by 3 experienced SHYBA volunteer coaches and youth basketball instructors who are passionate about introducing young children to the game.

The emphasis is always on teaching and development rather than competition.
Meet the Coaches:
Mickey Kutzler brings more than 15 years of youth basketball coaching and leadership experience to SHYBA. A North Penn High School Hall of Fame athlete, she earned three varsity letters, was a two-time league MVP, and helped lead her team to a SOL championship. She continued her career at the NCAA Division I level at Temple University, where she served as a three-time team co-captain and earned multiple academic and leadership honors in the Philadelphia Big 5 and Atlantic 10 Conference. Mickey has coached SHYBA recreational and travel teams, AAU, and CYO programs, and served as SHYBA President from 2014-2019. She is also a PIAA-certified basketball official, bringing valuable game management and teaching expertise to player development. Since 2017, she has served as Co-Director of the SHYBA Stars Program, helping hundreds of young athletes build confidence, learn fundamentals, and develop a lifelong love of basketball. The Stars Program remains her favorite coaching role because it introduces children to the game in a fun, positive environment.
Pete Messner will be embarking on his 28th year of coaching within the SHYBA ranks during the 2026-2027 season. Starting as an intramural coach and Board Commissioner in the late 1990's, Pete then coached five SHYBA Travel teams over the course of 12 seasons, winning two A-division Championships. Dozens of his former Travel players moved on to successful High School and College playing careers. He then served as SHYBA Travel Commissioner for five seasons before co-creating the SHYBA Stars Program in 2017. In addition to SHYBA, Pete has coached and provided instruction for many AAU, YMCA and Summer League basketball teams. Pete particularly enjoys working with Coach Mickey and Coach Kel in providing the fundamentals for SHYBA's youngest players, helping them prepare for team-oriented play at the next level.
