program history
The SHYBA Stars Program has been introducing young athletes to basketball since 2017. Over that time, 393 six-year-old children have participated, making it one of SHYBA's most successful youth development programs.
The program continues to serve as the ideal starting point for players who are new to basketball and interested in building a strong foundation before entering SHYBA's recreational league programs.

Coach Gene Kelly – SHYBA Stars Program
Coach Gene Kelly has dedicated more than 40 years to developing and coaching athletes through basketball programs at every level, including travel basketball, YMCA basketball, and recreational leagues. His passion for teaching the game and helping children build confidence, skills, and teamwork has positively impacted countless players throughout the community.
A longtime leader within SHYBA, Coach Kelly served as a member of the SHYBA Board for more than 15 years, helping guide the organization's growth and commitment to youth development. Since the inception of the SHYBA Stars Program in 2017, he has focused his efforts on creating a welcoming and supportive environment for athletes who are learning the fundamentals of basketball.
Coach Kelly developed and continues to lead the Stars Program's comprehensive 10-week curriculum, modeled after a highly successful YMCA youth basketball program. The curriculum emphasizes fundamental basketball skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, physical activity, and, most importantly, fostering a love for the game. Through his leadership, patience, and dedication, the Stars Program has provided hundreds of young athletes with a positive introduction to basketball while building confidence both on and off the court.
Coach Kelly's lasting impact on SHYBA reflects his belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and experience success through sports. His commitment to youth development.
